Dear Agung,
It's that time again... graduation! While college graduation was almost 20 years ago for me, this time of year still reminds me of those dreaded questions about job search process and career prospects. "What do you want to do? Are you being realistic? Can you get a job doing that?"
These same questions come up for almost anybody facing a change in professional lives - from moving to having a baby to being laid off to changing careers. And here's my advice:
  1. Forget about a straight "climb to the top," since careers nowadays rarely go in a straight line, rather they have sidestops, hops, skips, and occasionally jumps back.
  2. Be a really good job-seeker to find the best job opportunities that fit you and to have options.
  3. Consider each opportunity and do a gut check. The role, the people, the mission, the company culture, the benefits, etc. Do you think you'd like the job and do you think you'd like the company? If so, don't worry about the title.
From personal experience, at one point in my career I chose to go from being the CEO of a multi-million dollar company to being a Marketing Coordinator for a local cooking school. I needed a change and wanted to do something both more tangible and on a topic I cared about. Cooking and education fit the bill.
The job title was many rungs "down the ladder" and quite a few of my friends asked me what the heck I was doing. But I enjoyed the job, performed way beyond expectations, and within 3 years I was offered the job to run the school. Bottom line: where you start isn't necessarily where you finish, especially if you're doing a great job.
Along those lines, if you know of someone who is looking for a new job, or a new chapter in their career, please consider giving them a Gift Certificate to FlexJobs. You'll not only give them a leg up in their job search, but you'll also give them hope for finding a job that really fits their life! And of course, please read on for job searching tips, great job leads, and more. Many cheers,

Sara, and the FlexJobs Team

So now that it's time to head back into the workforce, you really don't have any idea of what you'd like to do. You know that you definitely don't want to be just a body filling up space and biding your time until the workday's over.
