Dear Agung,
I think A LOT about work flexibility, and the various reasons, benefits and challenges to making flexible options more accessible to the people who want them. But I recently had a light bulb turned on about a new way of looking at work flexibility, and it'a based on employer-employee reciprocity.
I was reading a blog post from a fellow supporter in the 1 Million for Work Flexibility initiative, discussing the expectations that high-performing companies often have of their employees when important projects, problems, or other out of the ordinary issues come up. The expectation was to be available. Work extra hours, be available for a conference call at night or over the weekend, or bring your work home with you to meet a deadline, whatever it takes to get the job done.
Then I thought about the correlation between the expectations that employees are expected to step up for work emergencies, but that many employers won't give the same consideration for their employees' personal/family emergencies. Now imagine if it was reciprocated, and employers did give that same respect to their employees. It certainly would lead to a more healthy working relationship, wouldn't it? I certainly believe so, and I hope this light bulb turns on for more business owners.
So here is a cheers to those employers who already offer work flexibility, and a continued belief that more will get smart and start offering it! How to Bring up Work Flexibility in a Job Interview
We asked Alexandra Levit, a former nationally syndicated career columnist for the Wall Street Journal and a current writer for the New York Times, what she thought about this question. Her response? "The first question to address on this topic is -- should you bring up work flexibility in an initial job interview? And in general, the answer is no." She goes on with why, and tips on if work flexibility is a deal-breaker how to dig a little deeper to find out how likely the employer is to consider a flexible arrangement.
